In celebration of a rich history of diversity and the untamed beauty to which the lodge is home, Mateya Safari Lodge has acquired one of the world’s finest collections of art from throughout the continent. Each piece purposefully chosen for the way in which its canvas captivates a vibrant feel for Africa. Proudly, Mateya Safari Lodge is home to 21 original paintings by Paul Augustinus for whom the vast landscapes and abundance of wildlife have been an emotive inspiration. Nothing quite captivates the vitality and exhilaration of the wild like Robert Glen’s magnificent bronze sculpture of an agile lioness attempting to bring down a leaping impala – “Close Shave”. Adding to the allure of this piece, Mateya Safari Lodge also boasts several exquisite bronze sculptures by Dylan Lewis.

Travel visas for South Africa can be obtained in most
countries around the world, and offer unlimited access to all regions
of the country. However, it is important to note that separate
independent countries reside within South Africa’s
geographical borders and that entry into and out of these countries
will require a multiple entry visa.
The Madikwe Game Reserve district is home to the Tswana culture and
language. However, travelers will find that English, although only
third in terms of language preference among the population, is
nonetheless widely understood and considered to be South
Africa’s international language of choice, spoken by all
staff at the lodge.
CURRENCIES
For general purposes, the most widely accepted currency is the South African Rand (ZAR), which can be exchanged for most major currencies at exchange bureaus located at all major airports and hotels. The following credit cards are also welcome:
- MasterCard
- Visa
- Diners Club
- American Express
PRECAUTIONS
A major advantage for tourists to the Madikwe Game Reserve
region is that it has been classified as a Malaria-free area.
The reserve’s only perennial river, the Marico, is also free
of all bilharzias. However, bathing in the Marico is prohibited due to
the presence of hippo and crocodile, both of which nonetheless provide
excellent game viewing opportunities. An additional advantage is that
the water in the region is perfectly safe for drinking.
In order to make your stay as comfortable as possible, we suggest the
following preparedness tips:
- UV protection sun block, lip creams, and sun hat
- Comfortable walking shoes for tracking safaris
- Prescription medicines
- During the winter (May to September) the mornings and evenings can be cold. Therefore we suggest you bring along a bush jacket and warm clothing for game drives and light clothing for the days.
- During the summer (October to April) light weight cotton clothing will provide both adequate shielding from the sun’s UV rays and comfort in the heat.
Mateya Safari Lodge can be accessed by private air charter directly to the lodge, on the scheduled air services or by road.
Transfers are excluded from the daily rate but can be arranged at an additional cost.
The Madikwe Game Reserve Gates open at 06h00 and close at 18h00.
