Rock Fig Lodge has a unique ground level hide overlooking a 20 000 litre watering hole. The hide is visited by a range of wildlife from the smallest klipspringer to the largest of elephants.

The low angle of the hide gives photographers the ideal position for take unique wildlife shots.

The hide gives you the opportunity to watch wildlife from ground level, with the animals unaware that you are there.

The hide is exclusively available to guests at Rock Fig Lodge at all times. The red LED interior lights make this a perfect setting for late night game viewing with you being completely invisible to the animals.

We have a choice of 2 lighting options for the water hole either a soft red or a white light.

The comfortable seating ensures that you stay as long as you want, waiting for that elusive leopard to walk by.

Residents at Ingwe Villa has access to their own private viewing deck.

A range of wildlife visit this water hole on a regular basis. It is well illuminated by a flood light for night time viewing.

The deck is furnished with comfortable easy chairs and couches for a picture perfect sunset.

We offer 2 game drives a day. The game drives are conducted by experienced game rangers.

Madikwe is located in the transition zone between the wet eastern and dry western side of South Africa . This is unique in that Springbok and Impala can be viewed in the same reserve as well as the Brown and Spotted hyena.

Other game to be on the lookout for is lion, cheetah and leopard. The white and black rhino can be spotted in Madikwe as well as the African hunting dog or more commonly known as Wild dog.

Madikwe Game Reserve is a Malaria free area that provides an unrivaled safari experience with the opportunity to explore the pristine African bushveld. The Reserve offers some of the finest game viewing opportunities in the Southern part of Africa. The wide diversity of habitat ranging from riverine thickets of the perennial Groot Marico river, large open plains, the steep cliffs of the Rant van Tweedepoort, Enselbergs and the Dwarsberg mountain range makes the Reserve unique. Madikwe is home to the “Magnificent 7” namely the lion, elephant, leopard, buffalo, black and white rhino, cheetah, brown and spotted hyena and Africas painted wolf- the Cape hunting dog. There are numerous species of antelope, giraffe, zebra and a host of other mammals that occur throughout the Reserve. Madikwe Game Reserve is a must visit and one of the best that Africa has to offer.

Please note:

Self catering bookings - We pride ourselves in preparing all our meals fresh and therefore if you would like to change from self catering to full board (catered option) or have any meals with us, please let us know at least 7 days prior to arrival so that we can prepare accordingly.

Deposit Policy

• For all bookings made within 60 days of travel
• Full payment Is required within 48 hours of your booking. This payment can be made via bank transfer or credit card (Master/Visa).
• For all bookings made more than 60 days of travel
• A 50% deposit Is required within 48 hours of your booking and the balance 30 days prior to arrival. This payment can be made via bank transfer or credit card (Master/Visa).

Cancellation Policy

• All cancellations must be in writing.
• If a booking is cancelled after confirmation, a 20% cancellation fee will apply.
• Payment balance will be due 60 days prior to travel, year round; bookings with 60 days or less to travel require full payment upon confirmation
• Cancellations made with 60 days or less to travel are subject to a 100% cancellation fee.
• All rates are quoted in South African rand

Our beautiful lodge has a magnificent setting, high up on the ridge above the Madikwe plains, offering spectacular views and stunning sunsets. Madikwe offers some of the most pristine and untouched wilderness areas in Africa.

Our lodge is small and intimate, allowing you privacy whether you choose to travel alone, as a couple or as a family group. It also allows our staff to give you their undivided attention as and when you need it. Our four self-contained villas are positioned far enough apart to ensure seclusion but remain within an easy walk to our restaurant, bar and pool deck.

Star Gazing
Madikwe has the most beautiful Winter skies and whether from your villa patio, the lodge entertainment deck or on a night drive, our knowledgeable rangers can point out astronomical delights!

The Exclusive Underground Hide
Get up close and personal with the animals in our beautiful, exclusive underground hide!

Built right next to the Rockfig watering hole, you can experience the thrill of seeing the animals so close, you could almost touch them. Elephants, zebra, Impala and even the odd cat are regular visitors. This is a favourite spot with the children as they watch the animals playing in the water and drinking here.

The underground hide is a photographer's dream as you are at eye level with the animals — you will be so close you won’t even need your zoom lens.

We offer a bar and snack service to the hide, please contact our wonderful staff.

High Tea
Served just before your afternoon game drive, choose from a delicious array of sweet and savoury dishes baked daily for high tea. Juices and iced teas are available as well and in summer, our homemade iced coffees are a winner! The perfect treat to fill you up before your afternoon drive.

The Cliff
A perfect spot to watch the sunset over the magnificent Madikwe plains, punctuated by several inselbergs which are unique “island-mountains”.

Complete the picture with a glass of Chardonnay or a Gin and Tonic and a tray of delicious snacks!

Our photographic safaris are carefully planned according to the photographer's specific interests, from all levels of expertise, who want to capture their once-in-a-lifetime images.

To run these specialised safaris, we call on experienced guides who are both incredibly knowledgeable about the birds, animals and bush and accomplished photographers themselves.

Bird Watching
You will hear and see an abundance of birdlife around your villa, on game drives and in our underground hide. Over 350 bird species have already been spotted in Madikwe! It really is a bird lover's paradise and offers the opportunity to tick off some rare and unusual birds from your list!

Build your own Pizza in the Bush
We have a really great pizza oven and our guests love the idea of a pizza evening on our deck, in the middle of the wild African bush!

Choose from a variety of toppings and have your pizza made and cooked in front of you.

Sundowners
There are a host of beautiful settings at Rockfig Lodge, all offering beautiful views of the sunset whilst you enjoy a sundowner.

Our main deck views extend over the African plains and on to the distant mountain ranges. Snacks including South African favourites, local biltong or droewors, are served with your drinks.

The Cliff is another perfect setting, or even the privacy and seclusion of your very own villa patio.

Barbeques in your Private Boma
For those of you wanting a more private dining experience, our chef will provide you with everything you need for a barbeque…or ‘braai’ as it’s called in South Africa. The private BBQ and fire pit will be ready when you arrive back from your magnificent safari drive. With the fire and lanterns prelit, and the chairs and tables set up for you, you’ll be ready to cook and enjoy your meal under the stars.

Food ​
On waking, you are served a light continental breakfast before your morning drive. A full hot breakfast and buffet awaits your return. Lunch is served at 1pm, high tea before your afternoon drive, and to end the perfect day — a relaxing candlelit dinner.

Our highly qualified and exceptional chefs are there to carefully prepare all your meals according to dietary/religious requirements or any food allergies. Plus, a private chef is available at an additional charge and can be pre-arranged. Kindly enquire when you make your reservation.

Kids Bumble Drives
Kids Bumble drives are designed especially for your little bush adventurers. They are offered to our younger children, from about 6 and under. The drives leave the lodge after breakfast and are a little shorter than the normal drives.

The rangers focus on all the things kids find fascinating…like toothbrush plants, beetles, snakes (at a distance of course), Golden Orb Spiders in their webs …accompanied by exciting bush stories from our rangers. If the ranger can find a good, clear animal footprint, he will stop and make a clay or plaster of paris impression for the children to take home.

Family Holidays
Children of all ages are welcome at Rockfig, in our spacious three-bedroomed family villa.

Alternatively, book the entire lodge and invite your family of all ages to join you for a very special safari experience together, ideal for special family events and celebrations.

Safari Walks
Set out in the fresh air on a bush walk and learn how your guide tracks the animals. This is where you also get to learn about the small animals, insects and plants. You might just get to see the "Small 5". To ensure your safety and a relaxed walking experience, a professional, specially trained and armed ranger is your guide. Duration of the walks varies depending on the weather, number of guests, and their fitness level.

Please note there is an additional charge for this and walks need to be pre-arranged when you book.

Safari Drives
Enjoy two wonderful game drives in the park each day with a dedicated professional ranger. The first leaves early in the morning as the African sun rises over the bush, and the second in the late afternoon when it is cooler and the sun is setting. Relax in our open game vehicle whilst your ranger takes you on a leisurely drive to unearth the treasures in the wilderness, at the very best game viewing times.
